The Rise of Canadian Volleyball Talent in the PVL: Savannah Davidson’s Journey and Impact

The Philippine volleyball scene has steadily gained recognition, and among the rising international players making an impact is Savannah Davidson. The PLDT High Speed Hitters' standout outside hitter has brought both her talent and her Canadian roots to the forefront of the PVL, becoming a key player in one of the league's most competitive squads.

Savannah’s journey from Canada to the Philippines is a reflection of the changing paths for Canadian volleyball talent. Unlike the United States, Canada offers limited athletic scholarships for university-level athletes, forcing many top prospects to seek opportunities abroad. For Savannah, this led her to New Mexico State, where she played four years before moving on to the University of Oklahoma to finish her college career.

"They actually don't give full scholarships for sports in Canada," Savannah shared. "That's why a lot of Canadian athletes travel down south." Like many others from her home country, Savannah relied on self-promotion through YouTube to gain exposure and connect with American universities. Her highlight reel caught the attention of several schools, ultimately landing her a spot at New Mexico State.

Her determination to challenge herself didn’t stop there. After her time in the Western Athletic Conference, Savannah transitioned to the competitive Big 12 Conference at Oklahoma, where she tested herself against some of the strongest programs in collegiate volleyball. Her willingness to step up into a more demanding environment speaks volumes about her drive to succeed.

When her college career ended, Savannah initially stepped away from volleyball, unsure of her next move. However, an unexpected opportunity arrived when PLDT offered her a contract to play in the PVL. Initially hesitant about committing to a two-year deal, Savannah talked the team down to a three-month contract for her first stint. By the end of that experience, she was hooked. "The support, the fans, the community... I was just blown away," she recalled.

Savannah's Filipino roots played a significant role in her transition. Her mother grew up in Quezon City before moving to Toronto in 1994, and much of her extended family still resides in the Philippines. "I think I have more family here than I do back in Toronto," she noted, adding that her move to Manila felt like a full-circle moment.

Now firmly established in the PVL, Savannah has become a major contributor to PLDT’s lineup. Her versatility as both a powerful scorer and a strong receiver has positioned her as one of the league’s top outside hitters. Her rise reflects a growing trend of Canadian talent finding success internationally, particularly in the PVL, where Filipino-Canadian players are carving out major roles on competitive rosters.
