The ‘DLSU System’ that Transformed Melissa Gohing

The De La Salle Lady Archers have been tagged as a champion team and a tough rival in the UAAP volleyball for a long time now. This is, mostly, due to their players. Members of the Lady Archers are loaded with undeniable talent, as well as, strong and tough personalities.

UAAP Season 71 Rookie of the Year, Melissa Gohing (nicknamed "The Ninja") has been an icon and recognized as one of the greatest liberos of the Lady Archers to ever play. This label continues through today as the now professional volleyball player has received several “Best Libero” and “Best Digger” awards.

In all these things she has acquired that have led to the tough player she is now, she never forgets to give credit to the DLSU system, most especially to their head coach Ramil De Jesus – who is also known as a tough and hardcore coach.

“From what I’ve learned with Coach Ramil was it’s not just about you and your role as a libero, it’s up to you how you’ll move the floor defense,” she said in the 8th episode of The Hang Time Podcast.

During her time in DLSU, Gohing admitted that they had crazy drills, like sprinting from the ground floor to the 9th floor then carrying a teammate with the same weight as them right after; they also used to have an “8 in 5” drill, wherein they needed to sprint in a 200-meter oval for 8 rounds in just 5 minutes.

She also stated that the training that they had with Coach Ramil was quite different than their training sessions with professional teams now as there are stricter rules and harsher punishments. That being said, it was not hard for her to adjust to the system during her rookie years.

“Based on my experience when I was rookie, I was just really blessed that I came from the strict training of Coach Jerry Yee during high school,” she said.

With the distinct, "tough players," personality and label of the Lady Archers, Gohing said that one should also have a good attitude in order to be a great player; some of them already have that attitude in them while some are trained to be tough through punishments which can lead to a lack of such an attitude.

“Ako, hindi ako disciplined na tao, pero through La Salle, umiba talaga,” she said.

Currently, Melissa Gohing has been busy managing everything about her plant business while being a parent to her 3 fur babies. She is also included under the team of the Motolite Power Builders.
